Periodontics

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that is primarily concerned with the gums. Your gums are a vital part of your overall oral health. They contribute to each tooth’s functionality by protecting the tooth roots and providing an anchor for the tooth. Unfortunately, many Americans neglect their gums’ health. As a result, nearly 50% of Americans suffer from gum disease – and many don’t even realize they have it!

Gum disease is a bacterial infection of the gums that causes inflammation. It is mostly caused by built-up plaque and tartar on the surfaces of the teeth. If left untreated, gum disease can cause tooth loss. In fact, gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss among American adults.

Fortunately, Dr. Bigelow is well versed in treating and preventing gum disease. He and his talented team provide effective periodontal treatments that can reverse the effects of gum disease.

At our Salt Lake City dental office, we offer scaling and root planing to treat gum disease. Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning of the root surfaces to remove built-up plaque and tartar that have settled in periodontal pockets. If needed, Dr. Bigelow will also prescribe an antibiotic or other medication to eliminate lingering bacteria.

You may have gum disease if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Bleeding gums, especially when flossing or brushing
  • Receding gums
  • Loose or wiggly permanent teeth
  • Consistent mouth sores
  • Persistent bad breath, known as “halitosis”

If you have any of these symptoms, we can help. Gum disease is often left untreated because many patients think the symptoms are only minor inconveniences instead of a larger problem.

Dr. Bigelow and staff are committed to your oral health! Call our office today to begin your periodontal treatment.
