Sedation Dentistry

Many of our patients have some reservations and anxieties about dentistry. At our Salt Lake City, UT dental practice, we offer sedation dentistry to calm your fears and quell your worries about your dental procedures. Dr. Bigelow provides laughing gas, oral sedation, and IV sedation to help you relax during your dental treatment.

Laughing Gas

Laughing gas is also known as “nitrous oxide.” It is administered through a mask that pumps the gas into the patient’s system. Upon inhaling laughing gas, the effects are immediate. Laughing gas can make you feel totally relaxed. It can also stimulate feelings of happiness. Laughing gas can dull the pain and lessen your awareness of your dental treatment. It is deemed completely safe for both children and adults. The added benefit of laughing gas is that it often works quickly and typically has little to no side effects. Laughing gas is also reversible and temporary. After your treatment, Dr. Bigelow will flush the gas out of your system by administering oxygen. You should then feel like your normal self within 2-5 minutes!

Oral Sedation

Shortly before your appointment, Dr. Bigelow will instruct you to take oral sedation medication. Oral sedation is a great alternative to laughing gas or IV sedation, especially for patients who have a severe gag reflex or are afraid of needles. It is easy to take since it comes in the form of a pill. The pills will inhibit the portion of your brain that controls fear and anxiety. When you use oral sedation, you should feel at peace during your dental treatment. Once you take the medication, make sure someone drives you to and from your appointment, as you may not be as alert as you normally would.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is great for patients who feel extremely anxious during dental visits. It is administered through a vein via IV. IV sedation usually doesn’t put you to sleep, but it does greatly lessen your awareness. It typically provides a long period of amnesia, so you shouldn’t remember anything from your procedure. Sedation administered through IV makes it easy for Dr. Bigelow to adjust your dosage, depending on whether you may need more or less.
